What a sad day we face with the passing of Madiba. We’ve lost a leader who’s changed the world, and leaves an incredible legacy. Nelson Mandela, thank you for your life and example.

In my pursuit for understanding and looking at the key principles drawn from Mandela’s life, I’ve wanted to ask:
How do we define success in leadership?
For some it is compartmentalised into having influence, financial freedom, the recognition and praise of others and being the master of one’s destiny. But sadly, for too few, the focus is not about making a difference in the lives of others. Nelson Mandela was all about making a difference.
So many people chase after the latest fad and swallow the life numbing success pills that we’re offered. Bigger house. More exclusive holiday. Greater convenience. Life on our terms. That wasn’t the way of Nelson Mandela.
There is an increasing number of people who want more from success. Who want wholehearted success. And many of those people were inspired by Nelson Mandela. I’m guessing you may be one of them.
What if success requires discomfort? What if success requires embracing frailty and leads you down a different route? What if this success takes everything you valued from you, with no guarantee that you’ll get it back. Is that success….or that stupidity?
This was the success that Nelson Mandela experienced, and subsequently there’s so much that todays leaders, entrepreneurs and thinkers can learn from him.

Nelson Mandela leaves a legacy that has changed the lives of millions. He wasn’t perfect, and like many he had his flaws. This isn’t about worshipping him, but learning from him. He didn’t set out to be a hero or to be a leader that people would write about years later. No. He embraced a cause he was passionate about and an injustice he couldn’t let go of. It was this revolutionary passion that led him through the twists and the turns, the torture and the praise and allowed his skills, character and humanity to be shaped and moulded for good. And as news of his death comes, we stop and stand in gratitude for his life, achievements and example.
He allowed himself to be a gift to others. May we in turn, be our own gift to others.
