The Nelson Mandela Way- 21 Principles for Passionate Leaders
What a sad day we face with the passing of Madiba. We’ve lost a leader who’s changed the world, and leaves an incredible legacy. Nelson Mandela, thank you for your life and example.
I’ve pulled together a few resources as a tribute to him. Here’s 101 of his quotes for you to tweet. Here’s a bloggers toolkit, and below is an eBook exploring the principles and lessons from his life.
In my pursuit for understanding and looking at the key principles drawn from Mandela’s life, I’ve wanted to ask:
How do we define success in leadership?
For some it is compartmentalised into having influence, financial freedom, the recognition and praise of others and being the master of one’s destiny. But sadly, for too few, the focus is not about making a difference in the lives of others. Nelson Mandela was all about making a difference.
So many people chase after the latest fad and swallow the life numbing success pills that we’re offered. Bigger house. More exclusive holiday. Greater convenience. Life on our terms. That wasn’t the way of Nelson Mandela.
There is an increasing number of people who want more from success. Who want wholehearted success. And many of those people were inspired by Nelson Mandela. I’m guessing you may be one of them.
What if success requires discomfort? What if success requires embracing frailty and leads you down a different route? What if this success takes everything you valued from you, with no guarantee that you’ll get it back. Is that success….or that stupidity?
This was the success that Nelson Mandela experienced, and subsequently there’s so much that todays leaders, entrepreneurs and thinkers can learn from him.
Why I hope you’ll find The Nelson Mandela Way helpful:
- Mandela’s thinking is even more relevant for the boardroom, organisation leaders and the start up entrepreneur than ever before, as it points to an authentic, effective approach to leadership.
- In today’s increasingly transparent culture, it’s no longer possible to hide your failings and the failings of your business. Short cuts get exposed and broken promises spread like wildfire. Nelson Mandela Way allows you to take a stock check of your approach to leadership, and make necessary adjustments.
- Without the deep work of personal development and organisational leadership, you are more likely to experience self induced failings that will affect you, your organisation and those close to you. Prevention is better than cure.
Here are examples of a few of the principles:
Be Courageous
Know When To Step Down
Be Comfortable In Your Own Skin
Lead With Conviction
Be The Change You Want To See
Think Big
Forgive and Love Others
Be Authentic
Make People Your Priority
Don’t Give Up
Make The Impossible, Possible
Some of these principles we’re comfortable with. They’ve been taught to us through many books and training on leadership. But others are more revolutionary and challenge us to the core.
Why is it that Nelson Mandela was loved and admired by so many? His sacrifice? His vision that echoed our hearts? His smile? His blend of integrity and humility? His authority and influence? Well, it’s all of this and more.
If you want to be encouraged and hear the heartbeats of heroes, I hope this short e-book will inspire you and remind you of the key lessons in his life. In the e-book, I will take you through:
- 21 Leadership Quotes from Nelson Mandela, that inspire and reveal his teaching on important issues.
- 21 Leadership Principles with a background to Nelson Mandela’s thinking and circumstances he faced.
- 21 photographs of Nelson Mandela, which are shareable under a Creative Commons Licence.

Nelson Mandela leaves a legacy that has changed the lives of millions. He wasn’t perfect, and like many he had his flaws. This isn’t about worshipping him, but learning from him. He didn’t set out to be a hero or to be a leader that people would write about years later. No. He embraced a cause he was passionate about and an injustice he couldn’t let go of. It was this revolutionary passion that led him through the twists and the turns, the torture and the praise and allowed his skills, character and humanity to be shaped and moulded for good. And as news of his death comes, we stop and stand in gratitude for his life, achievements and example.
He allowed himself to be a gift to others. May we in turn, be our own gift to others.
